Warm sand, a cloudless sky, beach days with mates and happy family times: these essential summer pleasures make for unforgettable holidays, and you can enjoy them all at Villa des Pins. With space for up to 16 in its eight bedrooms, this is a laid-back, practical villa for two or three families to share, with everything you need within walking distance.

The top floor space is heaven for the younger members of your party, simply furnished with dormitory-style bedrooms tucked under the eaves and promising the thrill of a week-long sleep-over. On the ground level there are two interconnected annexe bedrooms each with a shower room, also simply furnished and a good choice for teenagers or perhaps a couple with young children who would benefit from the comfort of mum and dad close by. The remaining bedrooms are rather more elegant and grown-up friendly, but this remains very much a fun and functional house that’s crying out to host epic family gatherings; subject to the owner’s permission, you can even bring your dog.

To the rear of the villa is a comfortable, covered garden lounge and barbecue kitchen, creating handy extra space for different groups to congregate as the mood dictates. It’s a great place to sit and keep a watchful eye on the kids in the pool, with the pine woods beyond creating a pleasingly private feel. You could find more luxurious villas in the area, but for a large group looking to enjoy the beaches and each other’s company, this lovely big house has a charm that’s hard to beat.

The local area

A holiday here is all about the beach, and you have three beautiful big choices at Plage VVF, Plage des Bourdaines and Plage des Estagnots. They’re all within a 10 to 14 minute walk, ideal if you have older kids who prefer to get around under their own steam. If you’ve come to surf, you’ll find schools and equipment hire nearby, and the delicious option of a steam in the villa’s hamam after a day on the water. If waves don’t appeal, Hossegor is full of fun shops and cool cafes, or you can enjoy the mill-pond calm of the lagoon lakes as an alternative to the surf.

Bike hire is the best way to explore further and discover the cycle paths connecting the coast, forests and lagoons. Hossegor centre is 3.5 kilometres away, and if you feel like a less surfy, more foodie French vibe, try Capbreton for superb seafood. For a day out, we recommend Bayonne, home of the eponymous cured ham, or Biarritz for faded Belle Epoque architecture and a thriving surf culture. Older kids will be clamouring to visit the Seignosse and Labenne-Ocean water parks, or if your teens are into golf, there are seven courses in the local area.

Once entirely marshland, this region is now a natural playground of sand dunes and beaches, pine forests and picturesque lakes, where walking and cycling are the most pleasurable ways of getting around. An idyllic meeting of France and California with truly spectacular waves and wide-ranging cuisine, upmarket Hossegor thrives on a surfing culture of stylish, laid-back living. However, in authentic Capbreton next door, and many of the towns and villages no more than an hour away, the historical roots go deeper and there’s much to explore.
